Ropeway Is...

Cable Railway, a ‘system which suspends carriages on cables installed in the air, to transport passengers or freight’ in accordance with Article 3 of the Cable Railways and Tramways Act. Strictly speaking, Ropeway is a climbing railway, which pulls cars by cables in highlands such as the Alps.

Ropeway Types

Ropeway is classified in several ways depending on its usage for (passenger, freight, and dedicated uses;) depending on the rope structure as (mono-cable, dual-cable and multi-cable); and depending on operation as shuttle or circulating type.
Shuttle Ropeway
Shuttle Ropeway
Comprises a pair of ropeway shuttle cars attached to a common cable which alternately ascend and descend an inclined right-of-way.
(Examples: Seoul Namsan and Mt. Sorak Ropeway)
Automatic Circulating Ropeway
Automatic Circulating Ropeway
Uses automatic connecting devices to suspend ropeway cars on a cable or cables and travels upon such in a single direction for passenger or freight transportation.
(Examples: Hallyeosudo viewing Ropeway in Mt. Mireuk, Tongyeong)
Fixed Circulating Ropeway
Fixed Circulating Ropeway
Uses fixed connecting devices to attach ropeway cars on a cable or cables and travels upon such in a single direction for passenger or freight transportation.
(Example: ski lifts)

Dedicated ropeway for freight transportation, such as temple necessities

Ropeway Advantages

Ropeway can be used in the very wide areas not only forest and mine development but also transportation, tourism, leisure and sports. Ropeway has advantages over other transportations as follows.
  1. Low construction cost.
  2. No bridges, road facilities, elevations, or embankments are required for crossing valleys, water, or wilderness.
  3. Can travel straight in the shortest distance regardless of topography.
  4. Less damage from rain or snow, and no need for snow removal.
  5. Does not interrupt other traffic and does not require traffic controllers when crossing railroads or vehicle roads.
  6. Significantly less accident damage by transport volume.
  7. Significantly less damage to natural areas than roads, and virtually no environmental impact by noise or exhaust gas
  8. Natural state can be restored at any time.
Given these advantages, Ropeway is highlighted worldwide as appropriate mountain transportation and leisure facilities. In Japan, passenger Ropeways are installed at 130 sites besides ski resorts.

Hallyeosudo Viewing Ropeway Features

Hallyeosudo viewing Ropeway, installed on Mt. Mireuk in Tongyeong is the only dual-cable automatic circulating gondola system in Korea. It was built using the latest Swiss technology. It is 1975m long, the longest tourist Ropeway in Korea. Despite its length, it is built in an eco-friendly design using a single pole, which not only protects the environment but also provides a very comfortable ride for passengers. It has 48 8-seat gondolas to transport passengers continuously, so riders can board instantly and enjoy beautiful Hallyeosudo scenery in private cars with family and friends.
